Cambodia Portal (niyey) development update

Where the project stands, what changed, and why this matters for everyday Khmer internet users.

Niyey means β€œto speak / to talk / to say.” Honestly, it sounds more like a chat app name than a portal or search engine. But for now, we are keeping the name and focusing on the thing that matters most: building a useful product first.

What changed recently

The project started as a mostly tech-focused portal. Now we are expanding it into a broader Cambodia portal for Khmer users, with topics that matter to more people, not just developers.

  • Tech
  • Economy and finance
  • AI
  • Entertainment
  • Education

We also transformed the site to be more Khmer-based (including Khmer title/interface direction), because the real audience is local Khmer readers.

Current immediate goal

Right now, the priority is simple: collect useful content from many Khmer sources, then organize it into interesting and trending article sets. People should be able to open one page and quickly see what is worth reading.

What is still weak (and honest)

Search still needs serious improvement. Today it does not understand synonym words, similar wording, or common misspellings very well. So in some cases, results are still weaker than they should be.

This is normal at this stage, but it is a core area we must improve next.

Long-term vision

The big vision is still the same: make this the homepage for Cambodia β€” a place that is useful for many types of people, with broader interests and practical features, so more Khmer users discover and use the web in their own language context.

What comes next

  1. Improve search quality (synonyms, typo tolerance, similar terms).
  2. Keep expanding quality Khmer content sources.
  3. Improve trending relevance so homepage feels alive and useful every day.

Still early. Still imperfect. But direction is clearer now β€” and that matters.
